Frequently asked questions

How much gravel base do I need under pavers?
4 in of compacted 3/4-minus crushed stone for patios and walkways, 8–12 in for driveways, laid and compacted in 2 in lifts. On clay soils or in freeze-thaw regions use the upper end. Order about 20% extra for compaction.
How much sand goes under pavers?
A 1 in bedding layer of coarse concrete sand, screeded level — never more, and never use it to fix a bad base. Stone dust is not recommended because it traps water.
How much polymeric sand do I need?
A 50 lb bag covers roughly 75 sq ft with standard 1/8 in joints and 2 3/8 in pavers. Wider joints or thicker pavers reduce coverage.
What thickness of paver do I need for a driveway?
2 3/8 in (60 mm) interlocking pavers handle residential cars when installed over a proper 8–12 in compacted base; the base matters more than the paver thickness. Thinner 1 in overlay pavers are for existing concrete only.
