Frequently asked questions

How far apart should fence posts be?
Standard spacing is 6–8 ft (1.8–2.5 m): use 6 ft for solid wood fences in windy areas and 8 ft for chain link or lightweight panels. Heavier infill and stronger wind mean closer posts.
How deep should fence posts be set?
A third of the above-ground height and always below the local frost line — typically 24–48 in depending on climate. Set posts in concrete with the hole about 3 times the post width, and slope the top of the footing away from the post.
How many rails does a fence need?
Two rails are enough up to about 5 ft of height; use three rails above that and for solid board fences that catch wind. The bottom rail should sit no more than 12 in above grade.
How much concrete per fence post?
A 10 in hole 36 in deep takes roughly 1.5 cu ft — about two to three 50 lb bags of premix per post. Fast-setting mix can be poured dry into the hole and watered for typical residential fences.
